AWS InCommunities Learns About Environmental Conservation and Community Empowerment with Komunitas Bambu Kuning
Bekasi, May 22, 2026 – Fifteen participants from Amazon Web Services (AWS), through the AWS InCommunities program, visited the Bambu Kuning Ecotourism Site in Pasirsari Village, South Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency. The visit served as a shared learning experience focused on environmental conservation, community empowerment, and the development of a circular economy through the utilization of water hyacinth waste.
The activity is part of the collaboration between AWS and Rumah Energi through the An Eco-Woven Economic Empowerment project, an initiative designed to support community-based environmentally friendly handicraft enterprises. Through this program, Komunitas Bambu Kuning (KBK) has successfully developed its first commercial handicraft products made from water hyacinth, a plant often regarded as waste and a source of environmental challenges in waterways.
During the visit, AWS participants learned about the community’s water conservation initiatives and had the opportunity to experience firsthand the process of weaving water hyacinth into marketable handicraft products. The activity provided a tangible example of how environmental solutions can go hand in hand with improving community livelihoods.
Beyond providing a learning experience for AWS participants, the visit also delivered significant benefits for members of Komunitas Bambu Kuning. Community members gained hands-on experience in hosting educational visits, facilitating knowledge-sharing sessions, and showcasing the environmental management practices they have developed. This experience serves as valuable preparation for the community to further develop educational and environmental tourism programs as a potential source of future income.
The activity demonstrated that community empowerment is not only about generating products or economic benefits, but also about strengthening capacity, confidence, and the ability of community members to engage with a wide range of stakeholders. This model of educational visits has the potential to be replicated for other companies and institutions interested in learning about environmental conservation and the transformation of waste into value-added products.
One AWS participant shared their impression after taking part in the weaving session: “I never realized how difficult it is to weave properly. It makes sense that water hyacinth handicrafts should have a higher economic value.”
Meanwhile, Sahid, a representative of Komunitas Bambu Kuning, expressed his appreciation for the visit. “Thank you very much for coming. This is important for us because it helps boost the confidence of our members,” he said.
Through this activity, AWS InCommunities, Rumah Energi, and Komunitas Bambu Kuning demonstrated how collaboration between the private sector and local communities can create meaningful and lasting impact. Beyond supporting environmental conservation, the initiative opens new economic opportunities and strengthens community capacity to grow independently and sustainably. This reflects the spirit of Empowered Indonesia (Indonesia Berdaya), where communities are not merely beneficiaries, but active agents who manage knowledge, share experiences, and inspire change from within their own communities.
