Microsoft Indonesia and Rumah Energi Introduce Rainwater Harvesting Technology in Bekasi and Karawang

Microsoft Indonesia dan Rumah Energi Kenalkan Teknologi Pemanenan Air Hujan di Bekasi dan Karawang

Rumah Energi in collaboration with Microsoft Indonesia conducted a Water Conservation Technology Socialization activity in two locations: Pasirranji Village (Cikarang Pusat District, Bekasi Regency) and Wanakerta Village (Teluk Jambe Barat District, Karawang Regency). This initiative marks the initial step in implementing a pilot project for rainwater harvesting technology—an alternative solution aimed at improving community access to clean water.

The event was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including village officials (Village Heads, Secretaries, Hamlet, RW, and RT Heads), representatives from the Environmental Agency, public health officials (Sanitarian Puskesmas), prospective beneficiaries, and representatives from Microsoft Indonesia and Kertabumi Recycling Center, which also served as the technical resource organization. This marks Microsoft Indonesia’s first initiative in the field of water conservation. The project’s success is expected to serve as a benchmark for potential replication in other areas.

The Village Heads of Pasirranji and Wanakerta welcomed the initiative, noting that many residents still rely on water from the Cibeet River for their daily needs—especially for bathing, washing, and sanitation (MCK)—despite the river’s declining water quality. The local Sanitarian Puskesmas further emphasized the health risks, citing high levels of E. coli bacteria in the river due to untreated domestic wastewater being discharged directly into it.

Representatives from Kertabumi Recycling Center explained that the rainwater harvesting system to be installed uses simple, low-maintenance technology that can be managed by the community. Filter replacements are affordable and readily available in nearby aquarium supply stores. Meanwhile, the Environmental Agency expressed full support for the initiative and encouraged the establishment of Kampung Iklim (Climate Village) institutions as part of long-term efforts to integrate climate change adaptation at the local level.
