Young Innovators of Rokan Hilir Showcase the Future of a Green Economy: Local Solutions Driving Real Change

On 26 November 2025, Rumah Energi and Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) held the Learning Event Green Jobs, a platform for disseminating sustainable practices developed by youth from Bangko Permata and Bangko Jaya Villages through the Desa Energi Berdikari program. The event served as a moment of reflection and knowledge exchange after a year-long journey of training, mentoring, and innovation that resulted in three green initiatives now delivering tangible benefits to the environment and local communities. The event opened with remarks from Rumah Energi’s Executive Director, Sumanda Tondang, who emphasized that green jobs present real opportunities for rural communities. “Green jobs are not just a concept, but a genuine opportunity for villages to grow independently, become empowered, and thrive sustainably,” he stated.

H. Khoirul Amri, representing the Rokan Hilir Regional Government, and Iwan Ridawan Faizal, Manager of Community Involvement & Development at PHR, also expressed appreciation for the creativity of young people in fostering a green economy. They highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration to expand green jobs practices to other regions.

During an interactive talk show, program participants shared their experiences developing three pilot projects: straw-mushroom cultivation using empty fruit bunches, maggot production from organic waste, and organic cucumber farming equipped with an Internet of Things (IoT)–based irrigation system. These initiatives demonstrate how simple ideas can evolve into practical solutions that reduce waste, strengthen the village economy, and introduce environmentally friendly technologies. The discussion was further enriched by insights from BAPPENAS and PT PHR on opportunities, challenges, and future directions for green economy development.

The series of activities continued on 27 November 2025 with a visit from the Head of the Environmental Agency of Rokan Hilir Regency, along with his team and the Adipura assessment committee, to the maggot cultivation pilot site. The visit formed part of the evaluation of village-level environmental management efforts. The delegation observed firsthand how the community group processes organic waste—including waste from the Makan Bergizi Gratis (Free Nutritious Meal) program—into maggot feed that is subsequently reintegrated into a circular livestock system. The assessment team expressed appreciation for this effective, simple, and replicable model of waste management.

These activities are expected to strengthen collaborative spirit and inspire more regions to adopt inclusive and sustainable green solutions, building on the successful practices demonstrated through the Green Jobs Rokan Hilir initiative.
