Weaving Hope: Komunitas Bambu Kuning Develops Water Hyacinth Crafts for Ecotourism and Village Economy

Bekasi, July 24, 2025 – The spirit of empowerment and local creativity echoed once again in Pasirsari Village, Cikarang Pusat District, Bekasi Regency. Komunitas Bambu Kuning (KBK), in collaboration with Rumah Energi and Amazon Web Services (AWS), held a Training on Weaving and Improving the Quality of Water Hyacinth Handicraft Products on Thursday, July 17 and 24, 2025, at the Bambu Kuning Ecotourism site.
The training aimed to equip community members with basic weaving skills and the ability to craft products using dried water hyacinth—a locally abundant, easily processed material with strong economic potential when properly developed.

The event was attended by members of Komunitas Bambu Kuning, representatives from the village government, Rumah Energi, AWS, and facilitators from Nia Craft, a local enterprise specializing in handmade crafts.
In his remarks, Sumanda Tondang, Executive Director of Rumah Energi, expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm shown by Komunitas Bambu Kuning. “This community is the driving force behind this initiative. Their energy and active participation are key to the success of empowerment efforts like this,” he said.

Hidayah Utama Lubis, Community Engagement Manager at AWS, emphasized that AWS and Rumah Energi act as catalysts. “The main actors in this process are the community members themselves. In empowerment, what matters is not who is the fastest, but who is resilient and sustainable,” he stated.

Support also came from Asep, Director of the Village-Owned Enterprise (Bumdes) of Pasirsari, who expressed the readiness of Bumdes to help market KBK’s products. “As long as the products meet the required standards, Bumdes is ready to support them. We even hope KBK products will someday enter the export market,” he said optimistically.

Sahid, one of the co-founders of Komunitas Bambu Kuning, shared his vision for the community to become a central hub for village ecotourism activities. “We hope our crafts become a source of pride for the village and a sustainable source of income for our members,” he expressed.
The weaving sessions were led by Ms. Nia and her team from Nia Craft. To ensure effective learning, participants were divided into two smaller groups, each with a dedicated trainer. They practiced weaving plate mats from water hyacinth. The sessions were interactive and spirited, with many participants quickly mastering the basic techniques and continuing their work at home. These works were then brought back for refinement during the second training session on July 24.

Through this training, a tangible vision of a self-reliant and sustainable local economic ecosystem begins to take shape. Rooted in local wisdom, strengthened by collaboration, and supported by multiple stakeholders, Komunitas Bambu Kuning continues to weave a more empowered future—aligned with the Indonesia Berdaya vision championed by Rumah Energi.
