Strengthening Women’s Capacity in Gender Action for a Just Energy Transition in Palabuhanratu

The presence of the Pro-Women 3 Project in Palabuhanratu aims to strengthen the role of women in advancing a just energy transition. While discussions around energy transition often dominate policy-level discourse, it is equally important to support grassroots efforts that encourage communities to shift toward more sustainable energy practices. A gender-inclusive approach—where women are recognized as key actors in both household and economic energy-related activities—deserves focused attention.

In April, a Seminar and Discussion on Gender Justice and Social Inclusion was held to present the results of a gender assessment, deepen understanding of gender justice and social inclusion principles, and foster cross-sector collaboration among local government, industry, civil society organizations, and community groups in pursuing a just energy transition. Building on this momentum, the Pro-Women 3 Project held a Gender Action Learning for Sustainability training on May 15–16, 2025, specifically for women in Palabuhanratu. This training aimed to promote gender justice while nurturing participants’ leadership skills across various spheres of life, including the workplace, family, and community.

The training began by exploring gender-related issues such as stereotypes, stigma, discrimination, double burdens, and violence against women. Participants were encouraged to reflect on these realities in their own lives and communities, increasing their awareness of everyday occurrences and social norms. With this awareness, they are better equipped to critically analyze situations, identify potential risks, and develop strategies to mitigate them. Moreover, participants were inspired to act as agents of change—bringing these issues into open, safe community discussions to raise awareness and encourage wider participation. Throughout the process, the training emphasized the importance of maximizing personal potential, fostering self-confidence, and serving as a source of inspiration in their communities.

On the second day, the focus shifted to leadership—particularly the role of women as changemakers. Participants were invited to identify female figures at the global, national, and local levels whom they find inspiring, including those within their villages. These women serve as examples of leadership, resilience, and community impact. Through this reflective exercise, participants were encouraged to recognize their leadership potential and to challenge negative stigmas often associated with women, especially in decision-making roles.

In the broader context of a just energy transition, women play a crucial role in driving the shift to renewable energy. As energy is deeply connected to daily life and essential needs, women not only have a strong understanding of energy issues but also the capacity to innovate and lead environmentally conscious solutions. Through the Indonesia Berdaya movement, Rumah Energi is committed to supporting the active participation of women and rural communities in this transformative process. This initiative strives to ensure equitable access to clean energy and sustainable food systems for all members of society.
