Bambu Kuning Community Holds Internal FGD to Discuss Water Hyacinth Utilization and Environmental Empowerment

Komunitas Bambu Kuning Gelar FGD Internal, Bahas Pemanfaatan Eceng Gondok dan Pemberdayaan Lingkungan

South Cikarang — The Bambu Kuning Community held an internal Focus Group Discussion (FGD) last weekend at the Bambu Kuning Ecotourism Area in Pasirsari, South Cikarang. The event served as a moment of reflection and a way to strengthen members’ commitment to environmental protection while exploring the economic potential of water hyacinth—an aquatic plant often regarded as a weed.

The FGD that took place in the green open space of the ecotourism area was attended by the Head of BUMDes Pasirsari, representatives of Rumah Energi, and all members of the community. In a fluid yet productive discussion atmosphere, the participants discussed various strategic issues related to the sustainability of the community program. This activity is part of the implementation of the Harmony and Togetherness for a Community-Driven Water Stewardship in Cikarang (HATI Cikarang) Rumah Energi project supported by Amazon Web Service. This project aims to steward water and convert water pollutants into products of economic value.

A key focus of the discussion was the utilization of water hyacinth, which grows abundantly in nearby canals and rivers. While the plant is often seen as harmful to aquatic ecosystems if left unmanaged, the Bambu Kuning Community has been transforming it into valuable products such as handicrafts, organic fertilizer, and raw materials for other creative goods.

Salah satu fokus utama dalam diskusi adalah pemanfaatan eceng gondok yang tumbuh liar di kanal dan sungai sekitar kawasan.
Water hyacinth can become a new source of income for the community but when managed properly.

“Water hyacinth has long been considered a nuisance, but when managed properly, it can become a new source of income for the community,” said one community member during the discussion.

Beyond exploring its economic potential, the FGD also served as a platform for members to share their aspirations, challenges, and future hopes. Issues such as limited equipment, lack of capital, and the need for further training were brought up openly. During the idea-sharing session, several innovative proposals emerged, including the development of processed catfish products like chips and nuggets, the revitalization of a traditional village herbal drink known as Doremi, and the creation of environmental education programs for both the community and local school children.

To close the event, participants were reminded of the importance of viewing their efforts as a dual mission: protecting the environment while improving residents’ economic well-being. The Bambu Kuning Community stands as a strong example of how grassroots initiatives can contribute meaningfully to environmental conservation and create sustainable local economic opportunities.

To close the activity, all participants were reminded of the importance of viewing this community movement as a dual effort: protecting the environment while enhancing the economic welfare of local residents. The Bambu Kuning Community serves as a powerful example of how community-based initiatives can contribute meaningfully to nature conservation while also creating sustainable local economic opportunities. This spirit truly reflects the vision of Indonesia Berdaya championed by Rumah Energi — to build independent, resilient communities that are socially and economically strong through the management of local resources. With continued support and shared commitment, initiatives like this are expected to inspire more communities across the country to move toward a sustainable and empowered future.
