Empowering Communities: 12 RMIT University Students Drive Biogas Innovation in Indonesia

Empowering Indonesian communities through sustainable energy is at the heart of Rumah Energi’s mission. This year, we’re significantly advancing that commitment by prioritizing research and development (R&D) to enhance the inclusivity and longevity of biogas utilization for users of the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme (IDBP). Our goal is to ensure that biogas is not only accessible but also seamlessly integrated into daily life, fostering greater energy independence and environmental stewardship.
To accelerate this vision, we’re partnered with International Internship to offer a unique opportunity: hosting final-year RMIT University students from Australia. Through the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan program, these students are tackling real-world challenges as part of their Capstone Project, their final academic assignment. This collaboration not only offers invaluable experience for the students but also injects fresh perspectives and innovative thinking into our ongoing work.

As the host organization, Rumah Energi is providing these 12 final year undergraduate students—specializing in environmental, chemical, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering—with three distinct R&D projects. These projects directly aim to enhance our existing biogas technology, focusing on developing a robust biodigester monitoring system, improving biogas filters for cleaner energy output, and implementing innovative automation installations to simplify operation.
Since kicking off in March 2025, the student teams have conducted online consultations, performed thorough research under the guidance of their academic supervisors and Rumah Energi’s field experts. They are now preparing for system pilot / field testing in July 2025, which will be vital for refining their innovations in real-world conditions and gathering essential data for future iterations.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions for Indonesian communities. We eagerly anticipate the results of the students’ work and the positive impact it will have on the IDBP.
