Uncovering the Water Crisis and Climate Change Through Voices from the Village

Menyibak Krisis Air dan Perubahan Iklim lewat Suara dari Desa

The training and capacity-building sessions on climate change and the water crisis, held in Pasirranji Village (Bekasi) and Wanakerta Village (Karawang), served not only as learning platforms but also as spaces for community reflection on their changing environment. Through interactive sessions, participants — ranging from posyandu health volunteers to village officials — revisited the importance of the water cycle and recognized the signs of climate change they had been experiencing firsthand: unpredictable seasons, increasing temperatures, and dwindling access to clean water during the dry season.

Diskusi kelompok mengungkap perubahan nyata dalam kehidupan sehari-har
Group discussions reveal tangible changes in daily life.

Group discussions revealed real shifts in daily life. “The air used to be cool and the water clear, but now there are many industries, and water from the Cibeet River is no longer the same,” said Mr. Mahmur, a local community leader. Another story came from Mrs. Yanti, who now has to purchase water for IDR 70,000 every two to three days. Residents also shared that wells have gotten deeper, rivers are polluted, and they’ve had to adapt using water tanks and sedimentation systems.

Despite mounting challenges, the community has begun to show awareness and take adaptive measures. They recognize the need for collective solutions, from building water storage infrastructure and promoting water-saving practices, to fostering cross-sector collaboration. The joint initiative by Rumah Energi and Microsoft has become a vital spark in strengthening the community’s resilience to water crises and climate change. It is not only about sharing knowledge, but also about creating spaces for active participation, positioning communities as central actors in protecting local water resources.
